Where can I find Balneol®?
Balneol® can be purchased over the counter, without a prescription, at drug stores across the United States or by ordering here. Balneol® can be found in the hemorrhoid care section at Walgreens and is found behind the pharmacy counter at other retail pharmacies. If a pharmacy does not currently stock Balneol®, you should ask your local pharmacist to order it for you. You may also order by calling toll-free 1-888-317-0001.
What is Balneol®?
Balneol® is a perianal cleansing lotion that:
- Gently, yet thoroughly cleanses and soothes the perianal area (without stinging)
- Helps relieve anal burning and itching associated with hemorrhoids, anal fissures, dry or chaffed skin or similar conditions
- Cleanses the skin of fecal residues
- Deposits a protective coating on the affected area
- Restores skin to its normal pH
- Offers relief for vaginal itching due to yeast infection or other vaginal irritation
- Requires no water
Why would I use Balneol®?
Irritation and itching (pruritus) in the perianal and external vaginal areas are caused by an imbalance in skin pH. This imbalance usually is the result of gastrointestinal abnormalities that cause diarrhea, constipation, anal fissures or hemorrhoids. In addition, life style choices and normal physical changes due to pregnancy and aging can affect the perianal and external vaginal flora.
How is Balneol®different from a soap?
Balneol® requires no water. It is a cleansing lotion. It will not dry the skin as soaps can. Balneol® also deposits a protective coating on the affected area.
How else can I treat perianal and external vaginal itching or irritation?
- Hydrocortisone preparations are the most commonly recommended anti-itch treatment in the U.S. However, with long-term use they can thin perianal tissue and promote rather than treat itching.
- Most yeast infections respond to prescription-free antifungals such as miconazole.
- Thorough and gentle cleansing is recommended to relieve current burning and itching and to prevent future episodes.
- A recent study even found that washing with a liquid cleanser was as effective as topical steroids for the treatment of idiopathic perianal pruritus.
How do I use Balneol®?
To cleanse and reduce discomfort in the perianal area
- Spread a small amount of Balneol®on cotton or clean tissue and wipe the skin around the perianal area cleansing after each bowel movement.
To cleanse and soothe the external vaginal area
- Spread a small amount of Balneol® on cotton or clean tissue and wipe the external vaginal area.
Caution: In all cases of rectal bleeding, consult physician promptly. If irritation persists or increases, discontinue use and consult physician.
How often can I use Balneol®?
Use Balneol® as often as necessary. Use for additional comfort between bowel movements and at bedtime.
